Filipinos all over the world celebrate the nation’s independence day on June 12th. The celebration, also known as Araw ng Kalayaan (Day of Freedom) commemorates the nation’s independence from centuries of Spanish rule in 1898.

It is one of the most highly anticipated national public holidays. Most Filipinos typically spend this holiday remembering the sacrifices of the country’s founding fathers, participating in nationwide parades and observing speeches from the president and government officials.

In recent years, businesses also join in to participate in the celebration by providing discounts and promotions and serving locally made products. This time is also a good opportunity to call for support towards local businesses.

Are you a local Filipino business owner looking to make the most out of the Independence day celebration? No worries. We will cover some promo ideas and inspiration that you can replicate to celebrate the national holiday.

Celebrating the national hero

In 2019, Phoenix Petroleum ran special discounts for people named after celebrated Filipino heroes. Motorists whose first, middle or last name matched the names of national heroes such as Jose Rizal, Melchora Aquino, Jacinto Zamora and more were entitled to a discount at Phoenix gas stations. This was a unique idea to celebrate the holiday, while also educating the next generations of Filipinos about the sacrifices of their nation’s heroes.

Supporting local Filipino businesses

Celebrate the spirit of Independence and join in to support local Filipino businesses in these uncertain times.  If you’re running a platform or marketplace, support your local merchants by giving an exclusive discount when customers shop at Filipino stores. The initiative can drive more transactions on your platform while building merchants’ loyalty.

Celebrating the national symbol

When the Philippines proclaimed its independence from Spanish authority, a national flag was adopted. The current flag features a golden sun and three golden stars, standing for the three main areas in the Philippines: the Luzon, the Visayan and the Mindanao. Blue represents the willingness to sacrifice while red represents courage. In celebration of the national flag, Four Season Hotpot offered up to 10% discounts for those who wore the colors of the national flag on June 12th.

Salute to the men and women in service

In celebration of the 122nd Independence, SM Supermalls gave tribute to  the men and women in service by offering special discounts. The discount was available for members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Philippines National Police (PNP) and other government agencies.

How to maximize the occasion?
